Dhangethi is a compact local island in South Ari (Alifu Dhaalu), under a kilometre long, with a population of about 940 at the 2022 census. Fishing, handicrafts, boat building and carpentry have long supported the island, and tourism work, including jobs at nearby resorts, is now the biggest earner.

For visitors it is a quieter guesthouse base within reach of South Ari’s reefs and the whale shark coast. Visit Maldives has listed snorkelling, diving, kitesurfing and windsurfing, sandbank trips and island-hopping among the activities, with whale shark trips heading to the reef near Maamigili.

Why visit Dhangethi

Dhangethi suits travellers who want South Ari’s marine life with a low-key island around them. It is smaller and more residential than the busiest guesthouse islands, so evenings are quiet and tourism sits alongside ordinary island life. Boat trips go to reefs, sandbanks and the South Ari MPA.

The trade-offs are a small choice of restaurants and activities on the island itself, and a longer boat ride to the whale shark reef than from Dhigurah or Maamigili. Travellers focused on whale sharks alone may prefer to stay on the MPA’s edge; those wanting a mix of reefs, mantas and village life will find Dhangethi a reasonable base.

Reefs, mantas and whale sharks

South Ari has reefs and thilas with turtles, reef sharks and schooling fish; Visit Maldives highlights Kahambu Thila for hawksbill turtles. Mantas follow the monsoon, favouring Ari’s western side from about December to April and eastern cleaning stations from about May to November, according to the Manta Trust. Whale shark trips head to the protected reef on the atoll’s southern edge.

Check before you travel

In the South Ari MPA, keep at least 3 metres from a whale shark’s body and 4 metres from its tail, never touch it and do not swim in front of it. Boats must follow the MPA management plan’s approach and contact-zone rules (as checked September 2026).

Island life and etiquette

Dhangethi is a small Muslim community. Dress modestly in the village, keep swimwear for any designated tourist beach or boat trips, and ask your guesthouse where swimwear is acceptable. Alcohol is not available on local islands. Expect a quieter Friday and brief closures at prayer times.

Respect local customs

Ask before photographing people or boatyards and workshops, cover shoulders and knees in the village and keep noise down after dark in residential lanes.

Getting there and around

Visit Maldives lists speedboats, MTCC public ferries, Villa Air flights to Maamigili and seaplanes as the ways into Ari (as checked September 2026). For Dhangethi, most visitors use a speedboat from the Malé area, or fly to Maamigili and continue by boat. Your guesthouse will usually arrange this. Public ferries are slower, do not run daily and are limited on Fridays.

Best time to visit

The northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, generally brings drier, calmer conditions suited to boat trips. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to October or November, is wetter and windier, and is when Visit Maldives reports the largest whale shark numbers, from about August to November. Wind can also make this the season for kitesurfing and windsurfing, where operators offer it.

How long to stay

Three to five nights covers a whale shark trip, a reef or manta trip and a sandbank day, with a spare day for weather. Dhangethi is close to Dhigurah and Omadhoo, so it fits into a longer South Ari island-hop if boat connections suit your dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dhangethi good for whale sharks?

Whale shark trips run from Dhangethi to the South Ari MPA, but the boat ride is longer than from Dhigurah or Maamigili. If whale sharks are your main goal and you have limited time, staying closer to the protected reef gives more flexibility.

Is Dhangethi busy?

It is generally quieter than the larger guesthouse islands, with a smaller range of cafés and excursions. That suits travellers looking for village life and calm evenings, but those wanting more choice may prefer a bigger island.

Can I drink alcohol on Dhangethi?

No. Alcohol is only sold on resort islands and must not be brought onto local islands. Some visitors arrange a day visit or a few nights at a resort if this matters to them.
