Finding the right experience

Most Maldives experiences happen on the water, so the first decision is how far you are prepared to travel by boat. From Malé, the airport or a South Malé or North Malé island, half-day snorkelling, sandbank and dolphin trips are easy; from a remote resort, the resort's own excursion desk is usually the practical option.

Check transfers first. A trip listed from Malé is little use if you are staying on a distant island. Check the sea. Weather can cancel or reshape a boat trip, so book early in your stay to leave room to reschedule.
