North Ari’s resort islands are spread across the northern half of Ari Atoll and the small, separate Rasdhoo Atoll, all within the administrative atoll of Alifu Alifu. The Ministry of Tourism recorded 11 registered resorts in Alifu Alifu at the end of 2024, each on its own island.

This page covers how resort stays in North Ari work, what to compare between them and what the surrounding waters offer, from manta cleaning stations to Rasdhoo’s channel and outer-reef dives. We do not name or rank individual resorts here; our accommodation listings show the current options.

Why visit North Ari Resort Islands

North Ari suits travellers who want a resort stay with strong diving and snorkelling nearby. The atoll’s channels and thilas attract reef sharks, turtles and schooling fish, and mantas follow a seasonal pattern between the atoll’s western and eastern sides. Rasdhoo Atoll, just off the north-east, adds outer-reef dives in blue water for experienced divers.

Because North Ari also has well-established local islands, including Ukulhas, Rasdhoo, Thoddoo and Mathiveri, it is easy to combine a resort stay with a few nights of guesthouse life. Some resorts offer excursions to nearby local islands; if they do, dress for a village visit rather than a beach.

How resort stays work in North Ari

One island, one resort

In North Ari, as across the Maldives, a resort usually occupies its own island. Everything you use, from restaurants and spa to the dive centre and house reef, belongs to that resort, and there is no village to walk into. That brings privacy and space, but it also means your choice of resort decides almost everything about your holiday, so compare carefully.

Transfers are arranged by the resort

Resorts organise their own transfers from Velana International Airport, typically by seaplane, by domestic flight to Maamigili followed by a speedboat, or by speedboat all the way. The mode, cost and timing vary by resort and are usually charged separately. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so late arrivals may need a night near the airport.

Meal plans

Resorts sell rooms on bed-and-breakfast, half-board, full-board or all-inclusive plans, and because there is nowhere else to eat, the plan matters more than in most destinations. All-inclusive packages differ widely in what they cover: check whether excursions, premium drinks, specialty restaurants and non-motorised water sports are included, and compare total cost rather than headline rates.

What to compare between North Ari resorts

Resorts in North Ari vary in size, style and price, and the differences that matter most are often not the ones highlighted in photographs. Use this checklist when comparing options in our listings, and ask the resort directly if something is unclear.

  • Transfer type and cost: seaplane, domestic flight plus boat, or speedboat, and whether it is included.
  • House reef: how close good snorkelling is to the beach, and whether there is a drop-off or a long, shallow lagoon.
  • Beach and orientation: sheltered and exposed sides change with the monsoon, as does seasonal sand movement.
  • Dive centre and excursions: which manta, whale shark and reef trips are offered, and how often.
  • Room type: beach or overwater villas, family rooms, and privacy between villas.
  • Meal plan value: what an all-inclusive package really includes.
  • Children and adults-only policies: kids’ clubs, minimum ages and quiet zones.
  • Manta access by season: whether the resort’s excursions reach western-side sites in the northeast monsoon or eastern-side sites in the southwest monsoon.

Marine highlights

Mantas

The Manta Trust reports that Ari’s mantas use cleaning and feeding sites on the western side of the atoll during the northeast monsoon, roughly December to March or April, and move to eastern-side sites during the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November. Sightings are never guaranteed, and resorts’ dive and snorkel teams track current activity.

Rasdhoo Atoll

Rasdhoo Atoll’s outer reef is known for early-morning dives on which scalloped hammerheads are sometimes seen, usually at depth and in current, for experienced divers only. Channels around Rasdhoo also offer drift dives with reef sharks, eagle rays and turtles.

Stay safe

GOV.UK notes that many resort islands are more than an hour from the country’s few hyperbaric chambers. Check that your dive insurance covers evacuation, dive within your training and ask the dive centre about its emergency plan.

Local islands within North Ari

Alifu Alifu has eight inhabited islands: Bodufolhudhoo, Feridhoo, Himandhoo, Maalhos, Mathiveri, Rasdhoo, Thoddoo and Ukulhas. Four have their own guides on this site. Bodufolhudhoo, known locally for its environmental initiatives, and Feridhoo, Himandhoo and Maalhos are smaller communities where visits from resorts or nearby guesthouse islands are more common than overnight stays; Maalhos has Buddhist-era archaeological finds.

Respect local customs

If you visit a local island from your resort, cover shoulders and knees, leave swimwear for the boat, and do not bring any alcohol from the resort. Ask before photographing residents.

Getting there and around

Visit Maldives lists seaplanes and speedboats among the transfer options into Ari, with Trans Maldivian Airways seaplanes serving North and South Ari resorts (as checked September 2026). In North Ari, the resort you book determines the transfer, which it arranges and usually charges for separately. Confirm the transfer mode, cost and luggage limits before booking flights, and allow for seaplanes flying only in daylight.

Best time to visit

The northeast monsoon, roughly December to April, generally brings the driest, sunniest weather and calmer seas, and is the busiest resort season. The southwest monsoon, roughly May to October or November, brings more rain and wind but often lower rates, and some divers favour it for pelagic life. Mantas are present in both seasons but at different sites.

How long to stay

Five to seven nights is common for a resort stay once the long journey and transfers are considered. If you are combining a resort with a local island, three or four resort nights at the end of the trip works well, as it reduces the risk of a missed transfer before your flight home.

Resort rates and availability in North Ari are tightest over the December to April peak, especially around year-end holidays, so compare early.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to a North Ari resort?

Your resort arranges the transfer from Velana International Airport, typically by seaplane or speedboat. The cost is usually separate from the room rate, and seaplanes fly only in daylight, so check your flight times against the resort’s transfer schedule.

Can I see whale sharks from a North Ari resort?

Some resorts offer whale shark excursions to the South Ari MPA, but it is a long boat trip from the north of the atoll. If whale sharks are a priority, consider a South Ari resort or a few nights on Dhigurah.

Can I visit local islands from a resort?

Often, yes. Many resorts run excursions to nearby inhabited islands such as Mathiveri or Rasdhoo. Dress modestly, leave alcohol at the resort and follow your guide’s advice on local customs, including prayer times.

Which North Ari resort should I choose?

We do not rank resorts. Compare transfer type, house reef, meal plan, room type and the excursions that match your season, then check recent guest reviews and the resort’s own terms.
