Hanimaadhoo
A long northern local island with its own international airport, and the practical gateway to the heritage islands of the Haa atolls.

Hanimaadhoo is a long, narrow local island in Haa Dhaalu, in the far north of the Maldives, roughly 289 kilometres north of Malé (Wikipedia). It is the site of the north’s international airport, and it is slowly developing as a guesthouse destination for travellers who want to see a part of the country few visitors reach.
Around 2,700 people lived here at the 2022 census, and the island has grown quickly as residents of smaller islands were resettled here. Come for a working northern community, a gateway to heritage sites in the Haa atolls and quiet beaches away from the village. Do not expect the resort-dense lagoons or packaged day-trip scene of the Malé and Ari atolls.

Why visit Hanimaadhoo
The main draw is access to the far north. With its own airport, Hanimaadhoo is the easiest place to start exploring Haa Dhaalu and Haa Alifu, where Visit Maldives highlights sites such as Utheemu Ganduvaru, the childhood home of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu. The island is also large by Maldivian standards, at about 6.8 kilometres long, so there is room to walk or cycle beyond the village.
The trade-offs are distance and limited tourism infrastructure. Guesthouse choice is small, excursions depend on what your host can arrange, and you are far from the manta and whale shark sites of Baa and Ari. Haa Dhaalu recorded 18 guesthouses across the whole atoll at the end of 2024, according to the Tourism Yearbook 2025. If you want resort facilities nearby, the far north has only a few.
Island life and etiquette
Hanimaadhoo is a Muslim community, and local-island rules apply. GOV.UK advises covering shoulders and upper legs away from resorts and warns that possessing alcohol outside resorts can lead to arrest and deportation. Swimwear belongs only on a designated tourist beach, if there is one, or on boat trips; ask your guesthouse where that is and where its limits run. Wikipedia notes banana cultivation on the north of the island, a reminder that this is farming and fishing country.
Be quiet near mosques during prayer times, ask before photographing people and homes, and dress modestly in the village. During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public in daylight. Friday is the weekly day of rest, and ferries and shops may run reduced hours.
Beaches, reefs and excursions
Wikipedia notes a beach on the island’s northern coast. Snorkelling and sandbank trips are arranged through guesthouses, and conditions on the outer reefs depend on the season and currents. Take care in the water: GOV.UK warns that strong tidal currents cause drownings in the Maldives, so swim only where your host says it is safe.
Cultural excursions are a strong reason to come north. Visit Maldives describes Utheemu Ganduvaru in neighbouring Haa Alifu as the birthplace and home of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, who led the campaign against Portuguese occupation in the 16th century. Kulhudhuffushi, the regional city, is also in Haa Dhaalu. Both are covered in our Far North Atolls guide.

Getting there and around
Hanimaadhoo International Airport has been upgraded in stages: a 2.7-kilometre runway was completed in 2024, and operations moved into a new terminal on 17 October 2025, designed for 1.3 million passengers a year (Edition.mv). Wikipedia lists Maldivian flights to Malé, Dharavandhoo and Ifuru, and international routes to Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram, with seasonal Kochi (as checked September 2026). Visit Maldives describes the flight from Malé to the Haa region as about 45 minutes.
Northern Raajje Transport Link ferries began in July 2023 in Zone 1, covering Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani, with planned links from the Haa Alifu hub of Dhidhdhoo to Hanimaadhoo and Kulhudhuffushi (PSM News). Check current routes on the RTL portal. On the island, ask your guesthouse about bicycles or local transport for longer distances. See getting around the Maldives.
Best time to visit
The Maldives Meteorological Service describes January to March as the dry northeast monsoon, with the most sunshine, and mid-May to November as the wet southwest monsoon. The north receives the least rain of any part of the country on average, and March to mid-May are the hottest months. For boat excursions and calm sea days, the dry season is the easier time.
How long to stay
Three to five nights gives time for a heritage day trip, a snorkelling or sandbank excursion and slow days on the island. Hanimaadhoo also works as a start or end point for a longer northern trip, combined with a resort stay in Noonu or Lhaviyani, or with Baa via the domestic flight to Dharavandhoo.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fly into Hanimaadhoo from abroad?
Hanimaadhoo is an international airport, and Wikipedia lists routes to Indian cities. International schedules change, so check with airlines directly. Most visitors still arrive at Velana and connect on a domestic flight.
Is Hanimaadhoo a good base for exploring the north?
It is a practical one, thanks to the airport and ferry links. Heritage sites such as Utheemu Ganduvaru are in neighbouring Haa Alifu and need a boat or ferry connection, which your guesthouse can help arrange.
Is alcohol available on Hanimaadhoo?
No. Hanimaadhoo is a local island, and alcohol is restricted to resort islands. Taking alcohol onto an inhabited island can lead to arrest and deportation, according to UK government advice.
