Baa Atoll’s resort islands sit inside a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and that shapes almost everything about a stay here. The Ministry of Tourism’s Tourism Yearbook 2025 counted 17 resorts in Baa at the end of 2024, each on its own island, spread around the lagoon and rim of the main Baa atoll.
This guide covers the resort side of Baa as a whole: how transfers and meal plans work, what the atoll’s reefs and seasons offer, and what to compare between resorts. It also introduces the local islands that do not have their own guides. For guesthouse stays, see our guides to Dharavandhoo and Goidhoo Atoll.

Why visit Baa Atoll Resort Islands
Baa combines the classic private-island resort holiday with some of the most important marine sites in the country. Visit Maldives describes a reserve of more than 139,000 hectares with around 1,200 reef-associated species and 250 species of coral, and Hanifaru Bay on the atoll’s eastern side hosts some of the largest manta gatherings anywhere. Several resorts run marine programmes and guided trips built around that setting.
It also sits within a short domestic flight or seaplane hop of Malé, which makes it a practical choice for a first trip beyond the Malé atolls. The trade-off is cost and dependence on the resort: transfers are usually priced separately, you eat where you stay, and moving between islands is by arrangement only. Compare total costs, including transfers and taxes, rather than nightly room rates alone.
How resort stays work in Baa
One island, one resort
Each resort occupies its own island, so the resort is your whole world for the stay: rooms, restaurants, beach, house reef, spa and dive centre. Alcohol is served on resort islands, and resort beaches have no local-island dress rules, though nudism and topless sunbathing are banned everywhere in the Maldives, according to GOV.UK. There is no walking to a neighbouring island.
Transfers are arranged by the resort
You do not buy a ferry ticket. The resort books your seaplane or domestic flight and speedboat, meets you at Velana and tells you the transfer time after you share your flight details. Transfer prices differ between resorts and between seaplane and flight options, so ask for them before you book the room.
Meal plans
Resorts typically sell rooms on bed and breakfast, half board, full board or all-inclusive plans. Because there is nowhere else to eat, the meal plan has a large effect on your total bill. Check exactly what an all-inclusive plan covers, including drinks, excursions and dives, since definitions vary.
What to compare between Baa resorts
- Transfer type and cost: seaplane only, flight plus boat, or both, and what happens with late-arriving international flights.
- Hanifaru access: whether the resort runs its own guided trips during manta season, how it allocates places under the bay’s visitor cap, and how far the boat ride is.
- House reef quality and whether you can snorkel it from the beach safely.
- Dive centre and marine programmes, including manta and turtle identification work.
- Meal plan inclusions, taxes and service charges, and which excursions carry an extra fee.
Reefs, mantas and protected areas
Hanifaru Bay is the headline. It has been a Marine Protected Area since June 2009 and is snorkel-only, with a maximum of five vessels and 80 tourists at any one time, certified guides and an entry fee, according to the CMS Sharks MOU factsheet (as checked September 2026). Manta season runs from about May to December, and resort trips work within the same rules as everyone else. The Dharavandhoo guide covers Hanifaru etiquette in more detail.
Beyond Hanifaru, the Biosphere Reserve Office lists protected core areas including Dhigali Haa and Dhigali Giri, the Mendhoo region with Nibiligaa island, Maahuruvalhi reef, Mathifaru Hura, Bathalaa, Angafaru, Goidhoo Koaru and the Wreck of Corbin, a historic French shipwreck. Visit Maldives notes that extraction and anchoring are prohibited in core areas. Resort dive centres visit many sites in the buffer zones around them.
Do not touch or stand on coral, do not collect shells or coral, and keep at least three metres from mantas and whale sharks, as the Visit Maldives manta code of conduct advises. Choose excursions that respect protected-area rules; an operator offering to take scuba divers into Hanifaru is breaking them.

Local islands in Baa
Baa has 13 inhabited islands (Wikipedia). Dharavandhoo and the three islands of Goidhoo Atoll have their own guides. The others, including the atoll capital Eydhafushi and islands such as Dhonfanu, Maalhos, Kamadhoo, Kendhoo, Kihaadhoo, Kudarikilu, Hithaadhoo and Thulhaadhoo, are covered here. Thulhaadhoo is traditionally known for lacquerwork handicrafts, and some resorts offer local-island visits.
If you visit a local island on an excursion, dress modestly (shoulders and upper legs covered), leave alcohol behind and follow your guide’s lead on photography and on where swimming is acceptable. GOV.UK warns that possessing alcohol outside resorts can lead to arrest and deportation. A local-island visit is a chance to see everyday Maldivian life, not a performance put on for tourists.
Getting there and around
Most Baa resorts use seaplane transfers from Velana, and some offer a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo followed by a speedboat. Visit Maldives states that several daily flights link Velana and Dharavandhoo, with a flight time of about 20 minutes (as checked September 2026). Seaplanes in the Maldives operate only in daylight (Runway Girl Network), so a late-evening international arrival may mean a night near the airport or a flight-plus-boat transfer.
Once there, you get around by resort boat on excursions. There is no public transport between resort islands. If you plan to combine a resort with a guesthouse stay, ask both properties how the connection works; see getting around the Maldives for how seaplanes, flights and ferries fit together.
Best time to visit
Come between May and November if Hanifaru is the priority. That is the southwest monsoon, which the Maldives Meteorological Service describes as the wet season, and the months when tides and plankton bring mantas into the bay. For drier weather and more sunshine, the northeast monsoon from January to March is the classic resort season. December and April are transition months with a mix of both.
How long to stay
Given the transfer time and cost, five nights is a reasonable minimum, and seven to ten nights lets you relax and still use several days for excursions. In manta season, allow enough days that one rough or quiet day at Hanifaru does not end your chances. Our 7-day Baa Atoll manta season itinerary shows how to split a week between a resort and a local island.

Frequently asked questions
Do all Baa resorts offer trips to Hanifaru Bay?
Many resorts in Baa run guided snorkelling trips to Hanifaru in season, but arrangements, distances and how places are allocated differ. Visitor numbers in the bay are capped, so ask the resort directly how its trips work and whether the entry fee is included.
Is a seaplane the only way to reach a Baa resort?
No. Some resorts also offer a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo followed by a speedboat, which can help with arrivals outside seaplane hours. The resort will tell you which options it runs and what each costs.
Can I visit a local island from a Baa resort?
Often, yes, as an organised excursion. Dress modestly, leave alcohol at the resort and follow your guide’s advice. If you want more than a short visit, consider splitting your stay between a resort and a guesthouse on Dharavandhoo or Goidhoo Atoll.
