Dhaalu is the administrative atoll covering South Nilandhe Atoll, south of Faafu and west of Meemu. It measures about 23 km from east to west and 38 km from north to south. Its capital, Kudahuvadhoo, had around 3,100 residents at the 2022 census and is home to the atoll hospital and Dhaalu Airport, which opened in 2017. Other inhabited islands include Bandidhoo, Hulhudheli, Maaenboodhoo, Meedhoo and Rinbudhoo.
Dhaalu opened to tourism in 1998 and is now resort-led: Ministry of Tourism figures for the end of 2024 counted nine resorts and nine guesthouses. Most visitors stay on a resort island, and this page explains how that works here, what to compare, and what the atoll’s local islands offer for anyone curious about Maldivian history and crafts.

Why visit Dhaalu Atoll
Dhaalu gives you a choice of resorts in an atoll far enough from Malé to feel remote, with the option of a domestic flight rather than a seaplane. That can help travellers arriving late or those wary of seaplanes. The trade-off is the transfer itself, which takes longer and costs more than a speedboat near Malé, and a limited local-island scene compared with Ari or the Malé atolls.
How Dhaalu’s resort islands work
Each resort occupies its own island and arranges your transfer from Velana International Airport, by seaplane or by domestic flight to Dhaalu Airport followed by a boat. Ask each resort which it uses, what it costs, and whether it depends on your arrival time, since seaplanes fly only in daylight. Rooms are sold on meal plans from bed and breakfast to all-inclusive, and the plan largely decides your total cost.
- Transfer: seaplane or domestic flight plus boat, total journey time and whether it is included.
- House reef: snorkelling from the beach, lagoon depth and current strength.
- Family facilities: kids’ clubs, pools and activities, which vary widely between resorts.
- Diving: an on-site dive centre and which channels it visits.
- Meal plan: what the board or all-inclusive plan covers, including drinks and excursions.
Heritage and local islands
Kudahuvadhoo’s old coral-stone mosque is known for the precision of its masonry, which the explorer Thor Heyerdahl described as among the finest he had seen. The island also has unexcavated mounds, known locally as hawitta, believed to be remains of Buddhist structures from before the Maldives adopted Islam. Hulhudheli and Rinbudhoo, in the west of the atoll, are traditionally known for the skill of their jewellers.
Some resorts arrange excursions to local islands; ask if this interests you. Local islands follow Muslim customs, so cover shoulders and legs, do not take alcohol ashore, and visit mosques only outside prayer times and with permission. The 2004 tsunami hit Dhaalu hard, and some islands were abandoned afterwards, so treat village visits as calls on living communities rather than sightseeing stops.
Dress modestly away from resort islands, ask before photographing people, and avoid eating or drinking in public in daylight during Ramadan. If you buy crafts, ask what they are made from, and do not buy coral or tortoiseshell items, which are restricted.
Reefs and diving
Dhaalu’s channels and thilas are dived by resort dive centres and by liveaboards that often combine it with Faafu as the Nilandhe atolls. Reef sharks, turtles, eagle rays and schooling fish may be seen in the channels, and sea fans grow on the deeper pinnacles. Conditions vary with the monsoon, so ask your dive centre which sites it visits in your month and what experience they require.
Maldivian regulations limit recreational diving to 30 metres, allow no-decompression diving only and ban solo diving. UK travel advice notes that many islands are over an hour from a recompression chamber; confirm your resort’s emergency arrangements.

Getting there and around
Resorts arrange all transfers, by seaplane from Velana International Airport or by domestic flight to Dhaalu Airport plus a boat. Guesthouse guests should ask their host about the options. Since February 2026, MTCC’s RTL ferry has run routes within Dhaalu and a connecting route from Meedhoo to Nilandhoo in Faafu (as checked September 2026). On resort islands you walk or use buggies; excursions go by resort boat.
Best time to visit
The Maldives Meteorological Service describes a drier north-east monsoon from about January to March and a wetter south-west monsoon from mid-May to November, with December and April as transition months. The drier months usually offer calmer seas and clearer water for diving and snorkelling. Wet-season rain generally comes in heavy showers with sunny intervals, and resorts operate year-round.
How long to stay
Five to seven nights balances the transfer with time on the island. A shorter stay is possible if you use a domestic flight with good connections, but seaplane timings and daylight limits can eat into the first and last days. Dhaalu combines with Faafu by ferry, or with a few nights near Malé before an international flight.

Frequently asked questions
Do Dhaalu resorts use seaplanes or flights?
Both are used. Some resorts use seaplanes from Velana; others use domestic flights to Dhaalu Airport followed by a boat. Ask each resort which it offers, as it affects journey time, cost and whether you can travel on a late arrival.
Can I visit Kudahuvadhoo’s old mosque?
It is part of a living community rather than a visitor attraction, so access depends on local arrangements. Ask your resort or guesthouse to check first, go outside prayer times, dress conservatively and ask before taking any photographs.
Is Dhaalu good for families?
Several of its resorts cater for families, but facilities differ a lot. Compare kids’ clubs, pools, lagoon depth and transfer type before booking, and check baggage allowances on the seaplane or flight you are offered.
