Goidhoo Atoll
Three small local islands on a separate atoll within Baa: quiet lagoons, simple guesthouses and transfers that reward careful planning.

Goidhoo Atoll is a small, separate ring of reef at the southern end of Baa’s administrative area, apart from the main Baa atoll. Its natural name is Goifulhafehendhu, and older charts call it Horsburgh Atoll, after the hydrographer James Horsburgh (Wikipedia). Three inhabited islands sit on its rim: Goidhoo, Fehendhoo and Fulhadhoo.
This guide covers all three. None has enough guesthouses to justify a separate page, and travellers often move between them or visit on day trips. Expect a slow, village-scale stay: small guesthouses, wide sandy lagoons, snorkelling from the boat and very little else to fill the evenings. It suits people who want quiet over convenience, and who are happy to plan transfers carefully.

Why visit Goidhoo Atoll
Goidhoo Atoll offers the local-island Maldives at its smallest scale. The islands are far enough from Malé that day-trippers are rare, and the combined population of all three is only around 1,100 people according to 2022 census figures. Lagoons are shallow and sandy, which makes for calm swimming in settled weather, and boat trips reach outer reefs and sandbanks around the atoll rim.
The trade-off is that everything takes more planning. Transfer options are fewer, facilities are basic, and weather can delay boats. If you want Hanifaru Bay in manta season, you will need a boat trip across to the main Baa atoll, arranged through your guesthouse; the Dharavandhoo guide explains the rules there.
The three islands
Goidhoo
The largest of the three, at a little over one square kilometre, with around 580 residents in 2022 (Wikipedia). On its northern side is the Goidhoo Koaru area, a wetland that is one of the protected core areas of the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve and holds the largest mangrove forest in the atoll, according to the Biosphere Reserve Office.
Fulhadhoo
A long, thin island, about two kilometres from end to end and only a few hundred metres wide, with around 340 residents in 2022 (Wikipedia). Its population has grown quickly in recent years. Guesthouses here tend to market the island’s sandy shoreline and lagoon, so it is worth comparing how close each guesthouse is to the water and to any designated tourist beach.
Fehendhoo
The smallest community, with around 200 residents in 2022 on an island of about 0.2 square kilometres (Wikipedia). It sits towards the western side of the atoll rim. Choose it if you want the quietest possible base, and check in advance which services, shops and boat links are available during your dates.
Reefs, lagoons and nature
The atoll lies inside the Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO in June 2011. Core areas in the reserve prohibit extraction of any kind and anchoring except in emergencies, according to Visit Maldives. Goidhoo Koaru is one of those core areas, so treat the mangrove as a place to look at rather than walk through, and follow any local guidance on access.
Snorkelling is usually done from boats on the outer reefs and around sandbanks, with turtles and reef fish common sights. Currents can be strong on channels and outer reefs, and GOV.UK warns that tidal currents cause drownings in the Maldives; swim only where your guesthouse says it is safe, and snorkel with a guide beyond the lagoon.
Island life and etiquette
Life on all three islands revolves around family, fishing, the mosque and the arrival of boats. Guesthouse hosts are often closely involved in your stay, from meals to excursions, and are the people to ask about local customs. Shops are few and may close briefly at prayer times, so bring any essentials you rely on, and carry some cash in case cards are not accepted.
These are small Muslim communities. Cover shoulders and upper legs in the village, keep swimwear to any designated tourist beach or boat trips, and ask your host where that beach is and where its limits run. Alcohol is not available and must not be brought onto inhabited islands. Keep noise down around mosques at prayer times, and expect reduced services on Fridays.

Getting there and around
Most guesthouses arrange a speedboat transfer from the Malé area; ask for the schedule and confirm whether Friday departures run. An alternative is a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo, which Visit Maldives describes as about 20 minutes from Velana with several flights daily (as checked September 2026), followed by a boat across to Goidhoo Atoll. Public RTL ferries have operated in Baa since August 2025 (Edition.mv); check whether current routes serve these islands on the RTL portal.
Each island is small enough to walk end to end. Moving between the three islands, or out to Baa’s main atoll, is by boat and usually arranged by your guesthouse. See getting around the Maldives for how domestic flights, speedboats and ferries fit together.
Best time to visit
The Maldives Meteorological Service describes the northeast monsoon, from January to March, as the dry season with the most sunshine hours, and the southwest monsoon, from mid-May to November, as the wet season. For relaxed lagoon days and calmer crossings, the dry months are the easier choice. If you want to add Hanifaru Bay’s manta season, which runs from about May to December, accept that some boat days will be lost to weather.
How long to stay
Three to five nights is enough for most people: time to settle in, take two or three boat trips and have a buffer day for weather. Many travellers combine the atoll with a few nights on Dharavandhoo for Hanifaru, or finish with a resort stay elsewhere in Baa. Leave a margin before your international flight, because boat schedules on small islands can shift.
Find accommodation in Goidhoo Atoll
Guesthouse capacity across the three islands is small, so reserve early for December to April and for peak manta months, and confirm your transfer at the same time.

Frequently asked questions
Is Goidhoo Atoll part of Baa Atoll?
Administratively, yes: Goidhoo, Fehendhoo and Fulhadhoo belong to Baa. Geographically it is a separate small atoll to the south of the main Baa atoll, which is why transfers and excursions are planned differently from islands inside the main lagoon.
Can I see mantas from Goidhoo Atoll?
Hanifaru Bay is in the main Baa atoll, so you would need a boat trip across, arranged through your guesthouse with a certified Hanifaru guide. It is snorkel-only, and aggregations are seasonal and never guaranteed. A few nights on Dharavandhoo may be simpler if mantas are the priority.
Which island should I choose?
Choose by the style of stay you want and what your guesthouse includes. Goidhoo is the largest community with the protected mangrove wetland; Fulhadhoo is long and narrow with a lot of shoreline; Fehendhoo is the quietest. Check transfer arrangements before comparing rooms.
