Gulhi
A tiny, low-key local island in South Malé Atoll: close to the airport, small enough to walk round in minutes, and quieter than its neighbours.

Gulhi is a small local island in South Malé Atoll (Kaafu), about 21 km south of Malé and a short way north of Maafushi. It measures roughly 400 by 225 metres and had just under 1,000 residents at the 2022 census, which makes it one of the more intimate places near the airport to try a guesthouse stay.
The appeal is simple: a quiet village, a small designated beach for visitors in swimwear, and quick access to the same reefs, sandbanks and excursions that busier islands sell. The limits are equally clear. Choice of guesthouses, restaurants and shops is small, and many excursions are shared with or run from neighbouring islands.

Why visit Gulhi
Gulhi works well if Maafushi sounds too busy but you still want short transfers and a local-island budget. Streets are sandy and calm, the guesthouses are small, and daily life revolves around the harbour, the mosque and the school rather than tourism. It is also a sensible first or last night near Malé for travellers who would rather wake up by the sea than in the city.
Beach, reef and excursions
The bikini beach
Visitors in swimwear use a small, screened section of beach set aside for tourists. It is narrow, so it can feel full when several guesthouses are busy. Outside it, cover shoulders and upper legs, including on residents’ beaches, and swim in shorts and a T-shirt if you go in the water elsewhere. Your guesthouse will show you where the designated area begins and ends.
Snorkelling, surf and day trips
Guesthouses arrange snorkelling trips to nearby reefs and sandbanks, dive trips into the South Malé channels, and resort day visits. A left-hand surf break known as Guru’s is surfed near Gulhi in the main Malé surf season, roughly April to October. Ask whether a trip leaves from Gulhi itself or collects you for a boat based on another island, and what that means for timings. See our sandbank and island-hopping tours guide.
Gulhi is a Muslim community. Alcohol is not available and must not be brought onto the island. Dress modestly in the village, avoid eating or drinking in public in daylight during Ramadan, and ask before photographing people. Friday is the day of midday prayers, and public ferries do not run.

Getting there and around
Gulhi is connected to Malé by MTCC public ferry every day except Friday (as checked September 2026), and speedboats are quicker. Most guesthouses will book a speedboat pickup from the airport to match your arrival, and transfers between Gulhi and Maafushi can usually be arranged locally. On the island you walk everywhere. Allow a buffer day before an international flight, since weather can disrupt small-boat crossings.
Best time to visit
The Maldives Meteorological Service describes a drier north-east monsoon from about January to March and a wetter south-west monsoon from mid-May to November, with December and April as transition months. The drier months usually bring calmer seas for boat trips, while the wetter months are the main surf season in the Malé atolls. Rain generally falls in heavy showers with sunny spells rather than all day.
How long to stay
Two to four nights suits Gulhi: long enough for a snorkelling trip, a sandbank or resort day visit and some slow time in the village. Because it is so close to Malé, it also makes an easy opening or closing stop on a longer trip that continues to Ari, Vaavu or a resort island. See the 7-day Malé and South Malé itinerary.
Find accommodation in Gulhi
Gulhi has only a small number of guesthouses, so for dry-season dates it is worth booking early and confirming your speedboat at the same time.

Frequently asked questions
Is Gulhi or Maafushi better for a first visit?
It depends on what you want. Maafushi has far more choice of rooms, food and excursions but can feel crowded. Gulhi is smaller and calmer, with fewer facilities. If you want quiet but easy logistics, Gulhi is worth considering, with a short boat ride to Maafushi when you want more going on.
Can I swim anywhere on Gulhi?
Swimwear such as bikinis is only acceptable on the designated tourist beach. Elsewhere, swim in modest clothing, and only where your guesthouse confirms it is safe, since currents and boat traffic can be hazardous near harbours and reef edges.
Is Gulhi close enough to Malé for a last night?
Yes, it is one of the closest local islands to Malé. Do not rely on the public ferry for a flight-day transfer, particularly on a Friday; book a speedboat and leave a comfortable margin.
